TAZU

A renovation project for a tenant space located beneath the railway tracks between JR Tsuruhashi Station and Tamatsukuri Station in Osaka.
To the south of the surrounding residential neighborhood lies an arcade street that has uniquely developed into a symbolic presence within the area, where markets, retail shops, and restaurants stand densely side by side.
The district is characterized not only by the chaotic atmosphere of commerce, but also by the coexistence of diverse cultures and religions.

The project began with the client’s desire to create a place where people working through the night at the nearby markets and security companies could gather after work, enjoy a drink, and unwind together.

The space was planned as a ❝shokudo❞ (Japanese diner) in order to naturally resonate with the atmosphere of the morning hours.
The existing interior and exterior finishes, partially clad in brick, evoked traces of a past era in which the area flourished through the active incorporation of foreign cultures. This cultural background was reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.

Focusing on elements long rooted in the locality, the design seeks to update and reinterpret the character of the area. The visual disorder found in the nearby markets and warehouses to the south was carefully
broken down into individual elements and translated into the design.
Through the selection of materials, the arrangement of furniture, and the exposed treatment of equipment and wiring, a layered sense of chaos was intentionally created, resulting in a stateless space that avoids
adherence to any singular style while remaining deeply connected to its context.

At the entrance, shelves made of electro-galvanized steel, finished in the same specification as lightweight steel framing materials, display pots and liquor bottles, creating an immediate impression of visual density and informality for arriving guests. The shelving is designed as an open structure that allows sightlines to pass through, adding depth and visual continuity to the interior beyond.

A large communal table is positioned at the center of the space with the intention of recreating the lively atmosphere of people sitting shoulder to shoulder and sharing meals together.
The project aims to become a place loved by the local community while bringing renewed energy not only to the restaurant itself, but also to the surrounding neighborhood as a whole.
