HOUSE IN HIRANO

A renovation project for a 90 year old traditional townhouse.
As the property is part of a row house and directly adjacent to the client’s family home, the project was developed with carefulconsideration for the family’s future way of living as a whole.

Following demolition, the design process involved close on-site inspection and ongoing dialogue, preserving and exposing as many of the existing columns and beams as possible to carry traces of time into a clean and contemporary interior.

The kitchen was positioned on the west side of the ground floor, creating a continuous visual connection from the living area to thegarden.
This layout allows sightlines and circulation to flow seamlessly, enabling the subtle presence of family members to be felt throughout the house.
A steel pin-up board was integrated beside the kitchen, functioning as a shared communication device where notes and documents can be attached magnetically and exchanged among family members.

On the second floor, an open flexible space for children was created immediately west of the staircase, allowing natural ventilation to pass through from east to west.
On the east side, full-height sliding doors were installed so that the area can be enclosed to form a spacious independent room when needed.
